News for the armed stock

The NEWS window shows the latest headlines for the stock you have armed: the time, how old it is, the source, and the headline. Double-click a headline to open the article in your browser. Fresh items stand out, so you can tell at once what just arrived.

Two sources

Two things feed it. Headlines come from the news stream on your market-data key, and SEC filings come straight off the SEC's own public feed, as they are published. Both go into one list, newest first, and they never overwrite each other.

Why filings matter

On a small cap, a share sale announced in the middle of a move can be the very thing that ends the move. Offering-type filings arrive marked, and the order log flags them too.

Purple on the scanner

A scanner row turns purple when a headline arrives for that stock: the same signal, from the corner of your eye. News for your symbols appears in the order log as well, and a filing that arrived while you were busy is still in the list when you look.

In practice

When a stock suddenly moves, arm it, and open NEWS. If there is a fresh headline, you know why it is moving. If there is a fresh offering filing, you know what might stop it. And if there is nothing at all, that tells you something too.

Source and age

The age column tells you how fresh each item is, at a glance, and the source tells you whether it is a headline or a filing. Old news that is moving a stock now reads very differently from news that arrived a minute ago.

Paper first

Watching how news and filings line up with moves is something you can practise in paper, with live headlines and live prices, and no money at risk. Over time, the list becomes a record of what moved your stocks, and when.
